The Senior Attorney will provide legal advice and counsel to HR professionals and other business partners regarding labor and employment matters. You will assist in employment compliance matters by helping to develop policies, business and technology processes, and training and accountability plans regarding legal and compliance requirements. You will assist in managing employment related litigation, including providing input on strategy, updating litigation management tools and monitoring litigation expenses. Must be well-versed in labor and employment law. This individual will work with all levels of management across multiple functions in support of operational and strategic decisions.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal guidance and consultation to ensure compliance with applicable federal; state; provincial; and local labor and employment laws within the U.S. and Canada
  • Serve as general legal counselor for labor and employment matters; including advising on accommodations and leave issues, assisting with company investigations, advising on performance management issues, and responding to agency charges
  • Analyze complex business and legal issues; identify and assess legal risk and opportunities; and communicate legal advice in a clear and concise fashion
  • Assist in developing policies, procedures, and training to support compliance initiatives
  • Assist in managing employment related litigation, including providing strategy and evaluating and managing outside counsel
  • Conduct training for business partners on employment law compliance

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in a law firm and/or corporate legal department; experience with Canada preferred but not required
  • Expertise in applicable U.S. labor and employment laws, including FLSA, ADA, FMLA, Title VII, etc.
  • Experience with union campaigns and labor-related issues
  • Outstanding verbal, presentation, and written communication skills, including an ability to communicate sophisticated legal issues and risks in simple terms
  • Ability to effectively form relationships, collaborate with cross-functional partners and lead by influence
  • Ability to assess and effectively manage risk specific to each situation based on comprehension of the law as well as internal business objectives
  • Practical problem-solving skills, including strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to handle a large volume of work and meet critical timelines
  • Ability to work autonomously
  • Quick learner who operates with a high degree of professionalism, integrity and EQ

Education:

  • Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Licensed to practice law and in good standing with any U.S. state bar
